Visit from a church to the Safe House

On 11 November 2023, the Safe House received a visit from some brothers and sisters in Christ who were interested in getting to know the work the institution does for children and teenagers. When they arrived, they were warmly welcomed by the team on duty, which included Lucas, the General Director. The children, full of affection and joy, soon enveloped the visitors in a cosy atmosphere.

During the visit, Lucas clarified several of the visitors' doubts about the dynamics of the relationship between the State (Government) and the institutionalised children, highlighting the daily challenges faced by the Home and the approach based on the gospel and living with Christ.

The churches presence at the project was a delightful surprise for the children, resulting in considerable gifts and essential supplies for the home and its residents. This experience was deeply gratifying and meaningful, strengthening the purpose of strengthening ties between the local congregations and the Good Shepherd Project. The aim is to encourage the churches' participation in this noble mission.

The following day, we received extraordinary feedback from the visitors, who, after the Safe House, also visited another foster home in Sabará. They realised by observing how our teenagers and children receive exemplary care, highlighting the Christian atmosphere that sets Safe House apart from other institutions.

The presence and influence of Christ at Safe House is fundamental for several reasons:

Christian values: The ethical and moral basis of Christianity provides a solid framework to guide actions and decisions in the institutions. Principles such as love of neighbour, compassion, justice and care for the most vulnerable are fundamental in the context of foster care.

Inspiration to Serve: The example of Christ, who dedicated his life to service and compassion for those in need, inspires the members of the institution to follow this path, fostering an environment of generosity and empathy.

Spiritual comfort: For many children and adolescents in foster care, the presence of Christian values can offer spiritual comfort. This can help them deal with trauma, uncertainty and emotional challenges by providing a solid spiritual foundation.

Supportive Community: The Christian faith often emphasises the importance of community and mutual support. In foster care, the presence of Christ can foster a sense of community among residents, staff and volunteers, creating an environment of support and understanding.

Professional Ethics: Christian ethics can influence the professional approach of those involved in the institution, encouraging fair practices, respect for individual rights and a commitment to the dignity of each person.

Hope and Purpose: A Christian message of hope and purpose can be especially meaningful for those experiencing difficulties. For children in foster care situations, the realisation that they are loved and valuable in the light of the Christian faith can be transformative.

In short, the presence of Christ in the Safe House not only guides fundamental values, but also provides crucial spiritual support for those living in these institutions. This creates an environment that seeks not only to meet physical and emotional needs, but also to nurture the spiritual well-being of the people involved.
